Adhesive Type

Interior (MR) vs. Exterior (WBP)

The durability of Baltic Birch depends not just on the wood, but on the adhesive that bonds the plies. It is typically produced with two distinct glue types, each engineered for a specific environment.

Exterior Glue

Interior Glue

Crucial Distinction: A common misconception is that “Exterior” glue implies a higher quality panel. This is false. The quality of the birch veneers—the wood itself—is identical in both versions. WBP glue simply adds chemical resistance to water; it does not make the plywood stronger or flatter than the MR version.

Interior Grade (MR – Moisture Resistant)

  • Chemistry: Urea-formaldehyde resin.
  • Performance: “Moisture Resistant” means the panel can withstand normal humidity fluctuations and occasional dampness, but it cannot survive direct water submersion.

  • Visual & Laser: The glue line is lighter and clearer. This makes MR the preferred choice for laser cutting, as the glue burns cleaner and faster than phenolic resins.
  • Primary Use: High-end furniture, laser-cut components, toys, and interior millwork.

Exterior Grade (WBP – Water Boil Proof)

  • Chemistry: Phenol-formaldehyde resin.
  • Performance: “Water Boil Proof” is an industry standard indicating the plywood can be boiled in water for hours without delaminating. The glue itself is waterproof and weather resistant.

  • Visual: Phenolic resin dries to a hard, dark maroon color. This creates the high-contrast “dark stripe” often desired in architectural exposed-edge designs.
  • Primary Use: Bathroom vanity, outdoor furniture (must be sealed), concrete formwork, and subfloors.
